In Loving Dedication to Aunt Sylvia

This practice is rooted in a story that’s very close to my heart.

I was just 11 years old when I sat in that historic church in Montreal for my Aunt Sylvia’s funeral, listening to a room filled with people — clients, friends, and colleagues — share the ways she had changed their lives. Again and again, they spoke of how she made them feel truly seen and deeply cared for.

Although my time with her was brief, the picture of her that lives most vividly with me has been shaped through the stories of those who knew her well. What stands out — both in my memory and in theirs — is the way she carried a room. She brought a kind of joy and energy that was warm and inviting, paired with a strong sense of conviction. There was a confidence about her that was steady and unmistakable, yetnever intimidating — the kind that made people feel secure, not small.

Aunt Sylvia was a counsellor in private practice, and also a pastor’s wife. She carried both roles with deep care and integrity. Her presence held both strength and gentleness — she could speak with clarity and conviction, while at the same time creating space for others to feel known, valued, and understood.

Her faith wasn’t something loud or performative. It was lived. It grounded how she treated others — with dignity, compassion, and a deep belief in their inherent worth. She would often say that her love for people came from a love much greater than herself — that it was her relationship with God that shaped how she listened, how she cared, and how she showed up for others.

Though her life was taken far too early by cancer, her legacy lives on. That day, hearing those stories of how she had helped others heal and grow, something in me shifted. Even as a child, I sensed that this kind of work — this way of being with people — was something I was being drawn toward.

Danielle Jeffery & Associates was created in that spirit — from a desire to offer a space where people can feel known, secure, and supported. What began as a solo practice has grown into a community of counsellors who share the same core values:

Aunt Sylvia’s photo hangs here not just as a memory, but as a reminder. Her life continues to shape the work we do — calling us to create a space where people feel seen, safe, and valued, and where that experience can gently become the foundation for how they come to know and relate to themselves.
